JOGLOMA-SCOTT LAKE BRIDGE

Stick served as the architect for the Jogloma-Scott Lake Development on a design team led by Macknally Land Design working for the Alabama Trails Foundation. Located on Section 4 of the Pinhoti Trail – Alabama’s longest through-hike – the project’s scope includes rerouting the trail to avoid disruption to a sensitive historic site and providing a safe, accessible stream crossing. Stick provided a range of design solutions for the bridge that address user accessibility, environmental sensitivity, and the unique construction challenges of the remote site.

The need for extensive earthmoving at the remote project location is minimized by employing a sloped design. At the same time, strategic siting based on a close study of the existing topography enables the crossing to maintain a gentle 1:20 grade that adheres to accessibility standards. The span is divided into two prefabricated sections small enough to be transported and handled with smaller equipment, while still harvesting significant construction efficiencies.

Design of the abutments is likewise responsive to the practical realities of the project site. The use of concrete is limited to the accessible “near” side, while the “far” side employs heavy timber footings. Components are selected to be easily repairable and replaceable, ensuring long-term maintenance can be performed with minimal tools and expertise.

The bridge features a custom handrail that bends seamlessly from abutment to abutment, providing a sturdy grip for hikers while tying the entire design together with a subtle, unifying architectural accent.

The need for this project was identified in the Alabama Pinhoti Trail Built Environment Master Plan, a comprehensive planning package commissioned by the ATF in 2019.
